NWP Writer Badge: Public Criteria

Curators notes:
The National Writing Project awards Writer Badges to educators who have had a substantial engagement with writing in their Writing Project community such as organizing, leading and/or taking part in leadership development events focused on the teacher as writer.

The mission of the National Writing Project (NWP) is to focus the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of our nation’s educators on sustained efforts to improve writing and learning for all learners. The NWP Teacher-Writer Badge is issued to educators who complete a program of literacy learning, study, and leadership development that focuses on outcomes for writing, one of NWP’s Six Social Practices. These programs may be designed and administered by local Writing Project sites or by the National Writing Project.

The Teacher-Writer badge is issued by local Writing Project sites, or the National WritingProject, in recognition of achievements in this social practice. The badge is not subject-specific and can be issued to educators who work at any level, K-university, across the curriculum. The badge
can also be issued to educators who work in educational institutions, libraries, or community settings.

NWP writers are teacher-leaders with demonstrated knowledge and practice of writing and teaching writing. Holders of this badge may work through their local Writing Project site to design and deliver professional learning programs focused on teachers as writers. The National Writing Project’s Practitioner Badge indicates that the recipient has shared their teaching practice as part of a leadership program at a local Writing Project site or through an initiative of the National Writing Project and is recognized as a teacher-leader with expertise in teaching and learning at their local Writing Project site and/or by the national network.

NWP Teacher-Researcher Badge: Guidance Criteria

The National Writing Project’s Teacher-Researcher Badge indicates that the recipient has completed teacher research as part of a leadership program at a local Writing Project site or through an initiative of the National Writing Project and is recognized as a teacher-leader with expertise in this topic at their local Writing Project site and/or by the national network.

For the Sake of Argument: Teaching Evidence-Based Writing

The instructional resources contained in this article are designed to develop specific argument skills and include text sets that represent multiple perspectives on a topic. The resources also emphasize iterative reading and writing practices, the recursive development of claims, organizing and structuring writing, and embedding formative assessment opportunities. The formative assessment tools help teachers assess students' written arguments and provide specific feedback.
