The PBS multi-platform project American Creed explores the idea that America has a unifying set of foundational ideals. The project is inspired by the notion that, at key points in American history, movements to secure and expand democracy have successfully appealed to these ideals. The project includes documentaries of different lengths published in a PBS LearningMedia collection.

Since 2018, students around the country have been discussing American Creed documentary videos in class, with curricular support from the National Writing Project.

A partnership between Citizen Film (producer of American Creed); the National Writing Project; and KQED Education’s National Youth Media Challenge (a broad-based student engagement campaign), this initiative aims to engage students in exploring their own civic idealism and how idealism can be turned into action. Our partnership is designed to help students identify what motivates them to participate in their community and in America’s civic life.

Educators across all 50 states are encouraged to invite their students to compose and share their own media. After viewing American Creed documentary works, students will create and share their own stories and reflections in photos, captions and/or essays via KQED’s national Youth Media Challenge publishing platform.
